This route from Basel via Bern to Turin goes through the Great Saint Bernard tunnel (not to be confused with the Saint Bernardino tunnel in eastern Switzerland). The tunnel is 6 km long and goes from Bourg-Saint-Pierre in Southern Switzerland to Italy. For this tunnel you have to pay toll (passenger car about 30 euro single and 45 euro return).
When you arrive in Italy after the tunnel you pass through a beautiful mountain area and the picturesque Aosta valley.

In the 11th century, an Augustinian monastery was built on the Great St. Bernard Pass. The monastery also housed pilgrims who were on their way to Rome and other travelers.
Dogs were used to save pilgrims and other travelers on their perilous journeys through the mountains between Switzerland and Italy. The dogs were trained so that they could accompany lost travelers to the monastery or run back to the monastery in case of injured victims to get help. The dog could also dig people out of the snow. In a museum in Bern you can see the stuffed dog Barry, who saved up to 40 people in the early 19th century. Nowadays, shepherds and retrievers are mainly used as rescue dogs. Being lighter than the big and heavy St Bernard, they are faster and have greater stamina.
